PHYSICS 220/230
Lab 1: Using Computers & the World-Wide Web
Objective: to familiarize yourself with the computer and the World-Wide Web as they
apply to Physics 220 and 230.
In our first lab, we will begin by checking out the computers that we will be using
this semester. They are new and we will need to learn our way around the new network and
the workings of a new spreadsheet (Excel). We will then examine the Physics Department
website, particularly the pages relevant to the Physics labs. We will also see how to
search for useful information on the WWW.
In the course of your Web surfing, you should:
- send a "hello" via e-mail to the instructor
- use the WWW to find and download some information about a device that accelerates
electric charge. These devices are typically called particle accelerators. Numerous
accelerators exist around the world and use electric fields to accelerate various charged
particles. When you find such a website, write down the URL address as well as the actual
site name and print a picture or other information about the site. Then write a brief
description of the website.
