*note - the fractal dimension will only appear after the cluster has exceeded 300 particles. Diffusion-Limited Aggregation Cluster: For this applet, a new random particle is created with radius r at any random angle. This particle then takes one of four steps. Either up, down, left, or right. If this particle ends its step next to an existing particle or the seed, the particle then sticks where it is and the procedure is started from the beginning. The fractal dimension is the slope of the line created when plotting the logarithm of the mass vs. the logarithm of the radius. When the radius is completely filled up with particles, the slope would be equal to 2. Since the particle does not complete fill up, a different slope is received. Since the fractal dimension can only be accurately calculated for large clusters, that calculation is held off until the number of particles in the cluster reaches 300. |
