The extra electrons in a n-type semiconductor can be considered to reside just below the conduction band, thus requiring only a small amount of energy Ed to be excited into the band.
Conversely, the holes in a p-type
semiconductor can be considered to reside just above the
valence band; the electrons in the valance band need only
a small amount of energy Ea to be excited into a hole
(causing the holes to migrate down the band).
