Abstract
A macroscopic magnetic trap was created with the intention
of suspending a magnet in free space. Eight Helmholtz coils stacked
on top of each other and apropriately spaced were used to create
1) a constant magnetic field to orient the magnet, 2) a gradient to suspend
the magnet, and 3) an oscillating quadrupole potential to laterally
stabilize the magnet. Although measurements of all three fields correlated
with expected calculated values, the magnet was unable to be trapped.
