Abstract:

Through examination of three different systems, we were able to examine the properties of waves subject to different mediums and variables.  Specifically, we looked at an oscillating spring (longitudinal waves), a beaded string, and a system of connected sticks (both transverse waves).  Ultimately, we discovered non-linearity in the velocity of waves traveling through the system of connected sticks.  Stick spacing is the limiting factor causing this non-linearity.

Discovery Steps to Non-Linearity....

1)Spring

Linear

2) Beaded String

Evidence for Dispersion

3)Connected Rods

Non-Linear
