PROCEDURE

MEASURING e

  1. Spheres injected into viewing chamber (Adjust focus if necessary)
  2. Electric field turned on to positive(top plate +, bottom plate -)
  3. Voltage adjusted to balance sphere of 1e
  4. Balanced sphere observed for 8-10 seconds to make sure it stays balanced.
  5. Voltage recorded, and repeated for 9 other spheres in the 1e range then measurements made for spheres of 2e and 3e
  6. Charge found from voltages and averaged.

FINDING THE MASS

  1. Room temperature and Barometric pressure found.
  2. Spheres injected into the viewing chamber (Adjust focus if necessary)
  3. No Electric field for this measurement
  4. Time measurement for a sphere to travel distance from one reticule mark to another
  5. Time measurement repeated 24 times
  6. An average time found and the mass calculated using an average time.

ESTIMATION OF BOLTZMANN CONSTANT

  1. Same time measurements and temperature used from previous section.
  2. Calculated from equation in theory section.
