Mode Hopping in a Diode Laser

Tom Haynie and Doug Neumann

The objective of this experiment was to observe mode hopping in a tunable semiconductor diode laser. The length of the laser cavity was determined using the mode hops, wavelength, and temperature. The power of the laser for different input currents and temperatures was measured to see when lasing begins in the diode laser. The laser was used to observe the excitation of Rubidium from the 5s state to the 5p state. The following information on this page was used for an oral presentation in lab.
