PROPOSAL FOR A 1994 NPAC REU PROJECT
Abstract:
A computational physics simulation which models the behavior of ions in a
``trap'' is proposed as a test application for the High-Performance Fortran
(HPF) language. The Paul trap and the Penning trap, which use electric
and/or magnetic fields to confine ions, will be studied. The simulation
is expected to allow for investigation
of phenomena such as crystal formation, chaotic trajectories, and
thermodynamic properties of the atoms.
Numerical analysis of the ion dynamics will include spatial probability
distributions, Fast Fourier
Transforms, and energy calculations.
The graphical user interface will be developed in Application
Visualization System (AVS).
The suitability of HPF for computation-intensive physics simulations
and numerical analysis, as well as the actual physics being
simulated, are of interest.
